Cholecalciferol is a form of vitamin D, also called vitamin D3 or calciol. It appears as a colorless crystal powder. Its melting point is 82-87°C. Soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, chloroform and vegetable oil, and do not dissolve in water. The term vitamin D is, unfortunately, an imprecise term referring to one or more members of a group of steroid molecules. Alpha:  105° (c=0.8, EtOH 25°C). Cholecalciferol is used to treat or prevent many conditions caused by a lack of vitamin D, especially conditions of the skin or bones. It reduces calcium loss from bones and increases the production of normal healthy bone in patients with osteoporosis. Cholecalciferol is synthesized in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol under the action of ultraviolet B light. It reaches an equilibrium after several minutes depending on several factors including conditions of sunlight (latitude, season, cloud cover, altitude), age of skin, and color of skin.
