The Usage of Folic Acid

Folic Acid is a yellow or orange crystalline powder. Odorless and tasteless.
Specification:  97.0-102.0%. Folic acid  is a B vitamin (B9) found mostly in leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach, orange juice, and enriched grains. Folic Acid contains not less than 97.0 percent and not more than 102.0 percent of C19H19N7O6,calculated on the anhydrous basis. That's why it's so important for all women of childbearing age to get enough folic acid — not just those who are planning to become pregnant. Only 50% of pregnancies are planned, so any woman who could become pregnant should make sure she's getting enough folic acid.
Synonyms: N-4-[(2-Amido-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-6-terene)methylamino]benzoyl-L-glutamic acid; Vitamin B; Vitamin B11; Vitamin BC; Vitamin M; L-Pteroylglutamic acid; PGA
Synthetic folic acid supplements may be used in the treatment of disorders associated with folic acid deficiency, and may also be part of the recommended treatment for certain menstrual problems and leg ulcers. The most common neural tube defects are spina bifida (an incomplete closure of the spinal cord and spinal column), anencephaly (severe underdevelopment of the brain), and encephalocele (when brain tissue protrudes out to the skin from an abnormal opening in the skull).
All of these defects occur during the first 28 days of pregnancy — usually before a woman even knows she's pregnant. Repeated studies have shown that women who get 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) daily prior to conception and during early pregnancy reduce the risk that their baby will be born with a serious neural tube defect (a birth defect involving incomplete development of the brain and spinal cord) by up to 70%.
Properties:
Molecular formula: C19H19N7O6
Molecular weight :  441.40
Quality Standards: USP30
Melting point:  250°C
alpha:  20° (c=1, 0.1N NaOH)
Water solubility: Not easily soluble in water and ethanol. Slightly soluble methanol. Soluble in acid or alkaline solution.
Function and Usage: Folic acid acts as a coenzyme (with vitamin B-12 and vitamin C) in the breakdown (metabolism) of proteins and in the synthesis of new proteins. It is necessary for the production of red blood cells and the synthesis of DNA (which controls heredity), as well as tissue growth and cell function. It also increases the appetite and stimulates the formation of digestive acids.
