What is Ferrous Sulfate

Ferrous sulfate provides the iron needed by the body to produce red blood cells. Molecular Formula: FeSO4. Let's learn a bit about the usage, benefits and ferrous sulfate side effects. Iron(II) sulfate (Iron(II) sulphate) or ferrous sulfate (ferrous sulphate) is the chemical compound with the formula (FeSO4), known since ancient times as copperas. It is most commonly encountered as the blue-green heptahydrate.
Ferrous sulfate provides the body with iron, that is needed for the production of red blood cells. It is used to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia, a condition that occurs when the body has too few red blood cells because of pregnancy, poor diet, excess bleeding, or other medical problems. Ferrous sulfate, also known as iron sulfate, helps in treating or preventing diseases and conditions which are caused due to iron deficiency in the body, such as anemia. An iron deficiency is also caused when a woman is pregnant or when the diet a person undertakes, lacks in the required nutrients especially iron, if there is excess bleeding or some other health problem.
When it is to be taken:
1. Ferrous sulfate usually is taken three times a day between meals. Follow the instructions on the label carefully.
2. If you also are taking demeclocycline, doxycycline, methacycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline, or tetracycline, take it three hours after or two hours before taking ferrous sulfate.
3. Do not take antacids at the same time as ferrous sulfate; take them as far apart as possible.
4. Although symptoms of iron deficiency usually improve within a few days, you may have to take ferrous sulfate for six months if you have severe iron deficiency.
Ferrous sulfate provides the iron needed by the body to produce red blood cells. It is used to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia, a condition that occurs when the body has too few red blood cells because of pregnancy, poor diet, excess bleeding, or other medical problems. Industrially, ferrous sulfate is mainly used as a precursor to other iron compounds. CAS No.: 7720-78-7. It is a reducing agent, mostly for the reduction of chromate in cement. Ferrous gluconate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous sulfate belong to a group of medications known as oral iron supplements.  Other name: ferrous sulfate, ferrous sulphate, ferrous sulfate monohydrate, ferrous sulfate mono, iron.
